We got a Parcel #GetNZWriting - Report written by Nandita and Kodyak

In room 10 we wrote some poems and we sent them to Westport North School.

We waited for them to send their poems that they were going to write to us, and then
one day......Westport North School sent back something to us. When we opened the
parcel there was a poem that they had written to us “Black is it a shade”. There were
also little poems written on postcards, that each one of them had written to us. Each one
of the poems had numbers on them. We knew that all the little postcards were like a
puzzle. We had to solve the puzzle. We tried to solve it - we tried and tried until we got
it!

Everyone found it tricky but no one gave up!

Getting Inspired!

Today we were sketching some found "treasure" from our Gardens around the school.  Catherine made the students draw with their wrong hand.  The groaning from the students was entertaining but when they were allowed to swap back to their own hands, the next drawings were much better.  We had a trial using charcoal and then colouring in our work with chalk pastels.

School Kit #GetNZWriting Poetry

We have created some great poems!  Oh my goodness it has taken us quite a bit of time to gather all the words in our word banks.   Here we are after we have chosen our 20 stickiest words.  We then put 18 of these words into the format needed for our poem.   We are writing our poems onto a practice postcard.  Tomorrow we will be publishing these on to the postcards ready to send to our a class at Westport North School.

Get NZ Writing - School Kit

Room 10 are taking part of the Get NZ Writing Challenge.  We have been supplied a kit to help us create 32 amazing poems.  When we have created out poems we will send them to another class somewhere in New Zealand.  The exciting part is - the other class will send us their poems too.t

Our first activity was to write a poem about a colour.  We chose the colour blue.  Here is our amazing piece of collaborative writing:

Blue
The indigo blue sky was dotted with twinkling stars.
As I open the windows the bright, shiny blue sky shone into my eyes.
I look up and there is the bluest sky in the world.
The sky is blue without any clouds.
As I go outside, the shining blue sky lights up my eyes.
The blue sky is super, magnificently blue.
I lie down on the grass and look at the bright blue sky with cotton candy clouds.
A beautiful butterfly is flying in the blue sky.
I keep walking until I see a great big, sparkling blue waterfall.
The blue water is shining straight into my eyes.
When I look up into the blue sky I see fluffy clouds.
The blue sky is as beautiful as ever.

Blue is the colour of the sky and the ocean.

I see the blue sea waiting for me, bursting with life.
The blue water of the sea starts sparkling in the sun.
The cyan blue sky is reflecting off the water.
The blue ocean waves bash and tumble down on me.
I can see the blue, blue sky shining and sparkling.
The waves in the sea are as blue as the sky.
The dark blue ocean slides on to the sand.
I can see the light blue sky shining in my eyes.
The fresh cyan blue water is my favourite place to swim.
My favourite colour is blue.
Blue waves shimmer in the deep, dark ocean with rays of sunshine.
I have beautiful light and dark blue eyes.
Her eyes shimmered, a shining blue, as the sun sank into the clouds.
When I look in the blue sky, I see beautiful stars.
The beautiful blue sky with the twinkling stars is amazing.

Week 3 - Where can we go when we can't go to the Hukanui Marae?

Room 10 were already to go to the Marae on Friday but there was a Tangi, so we had to change our plans.  Instead we went to the Hamilton Gardens. 

When we first arrived we got to have a play on the playground. We went to Te Parapara (the Maori Garden) and Kapa Haka performed for us as well as some lucky visitors.  After they performed we had our kai.  We did sketching of patterns, carvings, items from nature and one other thing we chose. 

Then we got to explore the Gardens.  We went into the Italian Renaissance Garden followed by the Indian Char Bagh Garden. After this, we walked around Turtle Lake and found our buses waiting to bring us back to school. 

At the end we were all really tired, sweaty and hot.  The people who had never been to the Gardens really enjoyed visiting the gardens.

Mihi Whakatau for Ang, Ivy and Mrs Tyler - Week 2

Today we had a Mihi Whakatau for our new teachers;  Ang (Room 18),  Ivy (Room 16), and Mrs Tyler (Room 20). Beau and Anahera called them into the hall.  Mayesha and Jasmin were calling back and walked the new teachers in.  Kapa Haka performed a song - Hei Runga Hei Raro. Kodyak said his pepeha to the new teachers (in front of the whole school!). Kapa Haka sang Haere Mai,  Pippa introduced herself and welcomed the new teachers.  Then all of the students sang Ko Tenei Te Wa.  The new teachers introduced themselves to us. They sang Te Aroha.  Room 10 were very proud of Kodyak and Jasmin for being such great leaders today.
