Creating with Harakeke

Whaea Arna has been teaching us how to weave and plait using harakeke.  We were given a chance to work with some harakeke to see what we could create.  Look out for the giraffe Blake created and the fishing net Justis created in these photos.

Capturing the Kahu Huruhuru for the Art Festival

Room 10 have been given the task of providing some illustrations for a book to be published for the Art Festival in Term 3.  We were asked to try to capture the Kahu Huruhuru (Feathered Cloaks) that are at present on display in Room 7.  We were very intent on the task in hand.

Weaving with Paper

After we all created a harakeke putiputi for our  Mums on Mothers Day, Whaea Arna taught us how to weave using coloured paper.  It was decided that paper was much easier to weave than harakeke (flax).

Finding out about Harakeke!

We are really lucky to have Whaea Arna joining Room 10 for the next eight weeks of this term.  We have discovered that we have harakeke growing in our school gardens.  Today we went out to do some observations of our harakeke.  We took measurements and recorded everything we saw on our plants.  We even rated the health of the plants.  Some are looking pretty scruffy!

Sugary Drinks with Project Energize - Report written by Daniel and ?

On Wednesday Room 10 were visited by Project Energize’s - Jono and Zane. First Jono told us about sugary
drinks. Then we got into groups of 5. We were trying to figure out which drinks had the most sugar - from
the highest to lowest sugary drink.

We found out that the sugary drink with the most sugar is a flavored fruit drink E2. The lowest sugary drink is WATER!!! Room 10 also learned about how often we should have different drinks. We had lots of fun learning about sugary drinks with Jono and Zane.  

Our Historical Walk - Report written by Jawad and Seth

On Tuesday the 26th of March, Kauri Team went for a walk around Miropiko Pa, then along
River Road to Memorial Park, to learn about the history of Hamilton. First, we went to Miropiko
Pa and saw a house that had Maori carvings all over it. It had lots of information on the back
and the front of it.  Next to the house was a tall piece of wood called a Po, which had been
carved into 3 people. After exploring Miropiko Pa we had morning tea.

After we had morning tea we walked to Memorial Park and saw lots of cool stuff like the Spitfire,
the artillery gun and the anchor. All the statues were so big. One was bigger than all of them and
that was the Rangiriri (the boat). The boat was all rusty and some of it was broken off because
of the rain and the river.

It was so much fun getting to see so many different things, like the Spitfire, gun and the anchor
as we said at the start.  It was amazing - you should go and look at it one day yourself!
