Planting Beans - what happens under the soil?

Some of our Little Gardens haven't appeared to have done anything, so Catherine thought we could do an experiment with some bean seeds, to see what happens underground.

We used two recycled soft drink bottles that the tops had been cut off.  We lined the bottles with black paper and filled the inside of the bottle with seed mix.

Then we put three seeds around the outside bottle between the clear plastic and the black paper.

We also planted one seed in the top of the bottle.

After covering this seed with seed mix, we poured water over the seed mix (soil).

The last step was to make a black paper tube that would slide over our bottles, so we could trick the seeds into thinking they are planted in the ground.

Once again we will have to wait to see what happens next ....

Being Creative

This afternoon Toby, Savva and Henning were having a bit of time creating using the Knex in our room.  This piece is titled:  "Corona virus".  I love the symmetry of their creation.

Jump Jam Competitors

On Friday night two teams from Hamilton East School competed in the Jump Jam Competition at Boys High School.  We were really proud of the students in our class, who were in each team.  In the Freaky Hotdogs Team we had Eli, Cefton and Layton.  In the HamEast Party Girls we had Maia, Olivia, Ana-Beatriz and Natalia.

Both teams received a trophy:  The Freaky Hotdogs came second and the Party Girls came third BUT there was only half a point between the two teams.  Well done!

Planting Little Gardens

Room 10 started Term 4 off by everyone planting their own Little Garden (from New World).

We discovered that when you pour the water into the bowl with the soil tablet, the soil tablet grows:

Everyone got their seed mats planted.  Now we just have to water our seeds carefully everyday and wait....

We finished the 1,000 piece Jigsaw!

Today a group of students in our room, managed to complete the jigsaw puzzle we have been working on almost for the whole of Term 2.  It was a great feat and all of those who took part should be really proud of themself.

Genius Hour

Term 3 was the term for us to work on our Genius Hour projects.  Students

came up with their driving question and then worked on this either

collaboratively or independently over the term.  Some students found that their

original driving question was too big and needed a little fine-tuning but they all

learnt a lot.

In Week 9 we presented our projects initially to Room 8.  Then Room 8 and 10

moved all our hard work down to the hall and invited Rooms 9, 11 and 12

to come and see what we had learnt.

Please take a look at our Genius Hour Slideshow!

Haiku Poetry
