Planting Beans - what happens under the soil?

Some of our Little Gardens haven't appeared to have done anything, so Catherine thought we could do an experiment with some bean seeds, to see what happens underground.

We used two recycled soft drink bottles that the tops had been cut off.  We lined the bottles with black paper and filled the inside of the bottle with seed mix.

Then we put three seeds around the outside bottle between the clear plastic and the black paper.

We also planted one seed in the top of the bottle.

After covering this seed with seed mix, we poured water over the seed mix (soil).

The last step was to make a black paper tube that would slide over our bottles, so we could trick the seeds into thinking they are planted in the ground.

Once again we will have to wait to see what happens next ....

Being Creative

This afternoon Toby, Savva and Henning were having a bit of time creating using the Knex in our room.  This piece is titled:  "Corona virus".  I love the symmetry of their creation.

Jump Jam Competitors

On Friday night two teams from Hamilton East School competed in the Jump Jam Competition at Boys High School.  We were really proud of the students in our class, who were in each team.  In the Freaky Hotdogs Team we had Eli, Cefton and Layton.  In the HamEast Party Girls we had Maia, Olivia, Ana-Beatriz and Natalia.

Both teams received a trophy:  The Freaky Hotdogs came second and the Party Girls came third BUT there was only half a point between the two teams.  Well done!

Planting Little Gardens

Room 10 started Term 4 off by everyone planting their own Little Garden (from New World).

We discovered that when you pour the water into the bowl with the soil tablet, the soil tablet grows:

Everyone got their seed mats planted.  Now we just have to water our seeds carefully everyday and wait....

We finished the 1,000 piece Jigsaw!

Today a group of students in our room, managed to complete the jigsaw puzzle we have been working on almost for the whole of Term 2.  It was a great feat and all of those who took part should be really proud of themself.

Genius Hour

Term 3 was the term for us to work on our Genius Hour projects.  Students

came up with their driving question and then worked on this either

collaboratively or independently over the term.  Some students found that their

original driving question was too big and needed a little fine-tuning but they all

learnt a lot.

In Week 9 we presented our projects initially to Room 8.  Then Room 8 and 10

moved all our hard work down to the hall and invited Rooms 9, 11 and 12

to come and see what we had learnt.

Please take a look at our Genius Hour Slideshow!

The Unbelieve-a-Bubble Science Show with Emma

Emma was very funny.  To begin with she put water on her hand and then put soap bubbles on her hand.  Then she lit her hand on fire!  We think she had some flammable gas inside those bubbles.

Initially, she made medium-size bubbles.  We tried to make different shaped bubbles using a star, square and a heart-shaped thingamegigy.  But they just made sphere-shaped bubbles.  She made massive bubbles using a big bubble thingamajigy.

She made bubbles using soap mixture and helium and they went straight up to the roof and popped.

Fallan learnt that there are four bubbles on a car.  So if you came to school in a car you were riding on bubbles.

Devon, Mele and Idika took part in an experiment to see if they could trap carbon dioxide - from a fizzy tablet (effervescent).  They put some water in a little container with part of an effervescent tablet and put the lid on.  They shook the container and put it on the table.  The one Emma did exploded.  The ones the girls did, needed a little bit more of a shake by Emma but they did explode.

Emma taught us that a bubble is just some gas trapped inside something.  A balloon is a bubble.  She filled a balloon with air and then she let it fart.  Emma then filled a balloon with helium and she lit it on fire.  It popped like a regular balloon.  She lit the giant lighter again and set the other balloon on fire.  It made a flame explosion.  This balloon was filled with hydrogen.

We learnt more about how science is all around us and we are all scientists.   We all enjoyed the show!

Creating a Volcano using Playdough

Today we created playdough volcanoes, using baking soda and vinegar eruptions.  We taped a plastic cup to a piece of cardboard and put baking soda and vinegar into the cup.  After it had "erupted" we marked where the "lava" had flowed to.  We dried up the "lava" and placed a layer of playdough over where the lava had been.

We then erupted our volcano with more baking soda and vinegar.  Again once it had erupted we marked where the "lava" had flowed to.  We dried the "lava" with paper towels and placed a layer of different coloured playdough over the area the "lava" had flowed.

We then erupted our volcano one more time and marked where the "lava" had flowed.  After drying the "lava" we used another different coloured playdough to cover the area where the "lava" had been.

This enabled us to make a volcano with three different layers of lava.  We then used clear straws to take a core sample of the volcano - just like real scientists do!

Making a Volcano with Baking Soda and Vinegar

It doesn't matter how old you are - baking soda and vinegar volcanoes are exciting!

Check out our Volcano here!

Being Volcanologists!

We have been learning about different types of volcanoes.  One type - the Caldera volcano - is formed when the volcano erupts and falls in on itself.  This is how Lake Taupo was formed.  Often Caldera volcanoes have lakes in them.  We used a blew up a balloon and buried it in the long jump pit to see if we could re-create how a Caldera volcano is formed.  Watch the video to see what happened when the balloon was popped.

Cross Country Champions

Due to Covid 19 restrictions, this year we didn't get to participate in the Hamilton East School Cross Country.  Those students who wanted to compete were given to opportunity to compete on the 18th of August.

Room 10 was really well represented in the Year 5 and Year 6 competitions.  Here they are with their certificates.  Well done Layton, Muhammad, Ana-Beatriz, Mia, Natalia and Olivia.  Unfortunately, Olivia missed being in this photo as she had a dance examination to attend.

We are working hard learning how to do Report Writing!

The Walking Octopus

In the Northern Australia Rock Pools, there lives a rather unique and intelligent octopus. The species' scientific name is an Abdopus Aculeatus.

Appearance
Although this octopus seems very different it looks rather normal. It is a browny reddish colour with 8 long tentacles lined with hundreds of suckers. Its skin is bumpy in the water but when out of the water it appears shiny and smooth.

Actions
In order for the octopus to get out of the water, it must use its suckers to grip onto the rocks. Then it has to pull itself up onto the land. Once on the land, it slithers around and slides downhills. It also has to push itself to go back into the water.

Conclusion
Although this is an amazing marine animal they are rather rare and you can only find them in Northern
Australia.

St Johns - Emergency Responder Workshop

After morning tea we went to the Hamilton East School hall. We learnt about CPR and how to help people. My favourite part was the burns because the nurse told us that if you get burnt you need to put the burn in cold water. I learnt how to save people's lives. I practised bandaging my partner. It was a lot of fun.

What we did when we all came back!

Early this week we took some time to work through a lesson called The Teaspoon of Light, which was provided for teachers by Te Rito Toi - University of Auckland. This was to help us all think about our world, how it has changed and to help us imagine how it might be better.

Here are some photos of us drawing our dreams on Sarah's temporary cloth of dreams and Sarah asleep under it once we had finished.

Tuesday's Tuhituhi Task

Here's a treat for your ears!!!

Just about everyone from your school got together (remotely) to sing you all a little song. A BIG thank you to Yoshie who organised and produced it. Turn up the sound and enjoy!

Colour Changing Milk Experiment and what I did next - conducted by Jayden

I thought the milk experiment would work and it did. After I did the milk experiment, I wanted to add vinegar and baking soda to the experiment to see if it would turn into a volcano, but it didn’t work. I like the volcano experiment, it is fun.
