Levi and Ruth's Writing

The whole school visited Hukanui Marae on Monday 15 March.  It was such a great opportunity for the students to learn about being on a Marae.  It also inspired some great writing.  Here are Levi and Ruth's pieces of writing.  We call these a Moment in Time.

What is a role model?

Today we came up with a list about what a role model might be.  We think a role model might be someone who:

  • you want to be like when you grow up
  • you look up to
  • shows you how to be good at something ... a good example.
  • looks after you
  • you trust
  • cares about you
  • you admire
  • you count on

Portraits in Progress

We have been working on creating our own Portraits based on the artwork by NZ Artist Darcy Nicholas.  He is an amazing artist who uses the most unexpected colours within his work.  We can't wait to show you our finished pieces.  Here are most of the artists from Room 10 in action.

Compasses and Magnets -

Levi wondered whether the arrow of a compass will point towards a magnet instead of North so we borrowed a box full of mini compasses to see what would happen next.  We started to think and talk like scientists.  This is what we did:

Everyone got a piece of paper and we got a mini compass each.  We placed the mini compass on the paper.

We also had 3 big compasses and a giant red magnet.  Levi used the giant red magnet on one of the big compasses and the arrow of the compass did point to the magnet instead of north.  When he used the other end of the magnet it pulled the other end of the arrow.

Everyone got a silver magnet and put it on the side of the compass and moved it around the compass. The arrow moved with the magnet.  We tried it using black magnets and it worked.

Then we used coloured magnets.  We found that the green, red, blue, purple and yellow magnets were a mixture of negative or positive.  We had some odd magnets and one side attracted red and the other attracted the white needle.

Toby suggested we put all of the mini compasses on a sheet of paper and see if they would all point north.  They didn't.  Then we got the giant magnet and move it around the outside of the compasses.  Jarvis said they were definitely interacting.  Nevadah said it was very satisfying.

We think need to explore more about magnetism.

Room 10's Famous Sitting Down Foot-e-ball Race

We were learning to pass the ball using our feet and legs.  The ball was not allowed to touch the ground or else we had to go back to the start.  But we were also learning to use teamwork and communication.  We had to race against the other teams to see who could get the ball all the way past the second line of cones.  We loved it!!!!

Planting Beans - what happens under the soil?

Some of our Little Gardens haven't appeared to have done anything, so Catherine thought we could do an experiment with some bean seeds, to see what happens underground.

We used two recycled soft drink bottles that the tops had been cut off.  We lined the bottles with black paper and filled the inside of the bottle with seed mix.

Then we put three seeds around the outside bottle between the clear plastic and the black paper.

We also planted one seed in the top of the bottle.

After covering this seed with seed mix, we poured water over the seed mix (soil).

The last step was to make a black paper tube that would slide over our bottles, so we could trick the seeds into thinking they are planted in the ground.

Once again we will have to wait to see what happens next ....

Being Creative

This afternoon Toby, Savva and Henning were having a bit of time creating using the Knex in our room.  This piece is titled:  "Corona virus".  I love the symmetry of their creation.
