Planting Sunflower Seeds

Yesterday Room 10 was planting sunflower seeds for the competition at our school.  Our class made flower pots out of newspaper because the newspaper is more healthy for the environment.   We will eventually plant some of our sunflower plants in the school garden for the competition.  We used seed mix to put in the flower pots.   It was a lot of fun planting our sunflower seeds.  After we put the soil in, we placed in the seed and then after that, we added more soil to cover the seed.  In the end, we put the flower pots into big trays outside and watered them with a spray bottle. Today we continued planting our seeds for the people who weren't at school yesterday.

Grandparents/Special Visitors Day

Today we had a lot of Grandparents and Special Visitors come to school for the morning.  After a special assembly, they were invited into the classrooms to see their mokopuna learning.  Room 10 were working on our writing.  We had been learning to write instructions - how to make a peanut butter sandwich. Grandparents read the instructions and their grandchild followed them or watched as the students worked in pairs.  It was a delicious writing lesson!

Muhammad invited the ladies that teach him and his siblings after school and they all came!

It was such a great morning!

This week was Tongan Language Week.  A group of students decided to share a dance they were learning for the Pasifika Dance Competition.  Meleane, Fine and Veisinia were part of this group. They all wore beautiful clothes and their Mum's joined them on stage to sing the Tongan National Anthem.

Unplugged Learning - Feed the Mouse

Kete Aronui 2019

Room 10 were very lucky to have Whaea Arna working with us during term 2.  She taught us all about harakeke and how to harvest it.  We learnt not to step over the flax, not to eat while weaving, to say a karakia before weaving, and to always wash our hands after we have been weaving.

We learnt how to weave paper, how to plait (3 and 4 string plaits), and then moved on to using harakeke to create pieces of art for our Art Festival.  Here are the finished products, plus some other creations that some of us made.

Kaboom Percussion Visit

Today Kaboom Percussion came to perform for us.  Their names were Josh and Kat and they were amazing!  They needed some help during their show so Kat chose Natalia as her helper.  Natalia was a bit shy at first but then she went up on stage.

Special Visitors Came to Assembly

At Positive Assembly today, we were entertained by the Pasifika Group from Peachgrove Intermediate.  A lot of the students in the Poly Group were from Hamilton East, and have siblings here.  It was so nice to see them perform and show us how proud they are of their culture.

Visiting the Waikato Museum to learn about Matariki

We had to split into two groups so that half of Room 10 could visit the Museum with Tui Hub and the other half could visit the Museum with Kea Hub.  We enjoyed the walk there and back and we were very lucky with the weather.

At the Museum we listened to a couple of Maori myths.  One was about Matariki. Then we got to watch an audio/lighting show that depicted Matariki.  We were able to spend some time sketching the amazing patterns on the carvings around us and then create our own taonga out of clay to bring back to school.  Many thanks to our two parent helpers - Jennie and James.

Walking with an ANZAC

Please take a look at these video presentations created by some of our students, showing what they have learned from their independent research into their "own" soldier.  This research project is part of an amazing resource supplied by School Kit.  Thanks School Kit!

Creating with Harakeke

Whaea Arna has been teaching us how to weave and plait using harakeke.  We were given a chance to work with some harakeke to see what we could create.  Look out for the giraffe Blake created and the fishing net Justis created in these photos.

Capturing the Kahu Huruhuru for the Art Festival

Room 10 have been given the task of providing some illustrations for a book to be published for the Art Festival in Term 3.  We were asked to try to capture the Kahu Huruhuru (Feathered Cloaks) that are at present on display in Room 7.  We were very intent on the task in hand.
