Making a Volcano with Baking Soda and Vinegar

 It doesn't matter how old you are - baking soda and vinegar volcanoes are exciting!

Being Volcanologists!

 We have been learning about different types of volcanoes.  One type - the Caldera volcano - is formed when the volcano erupts and falls in on itself.  This is how Lake Taupo was formed.  Often Caldera volcanoes have lakes in them.  We used a blew up a balloon and buried it in the long jump pit to see if we could re-create how a Caldera volcano is formed.  Watch the video to see what happened when the balloon was popped.

Cross Country Champions

 Due to Covid 19 restrictions, this year we didn't get to participate in the Hamilton East School Cross Country.  Those students who wanted to compete were given to opportunity to compete on the 18th of August.  

Room 10 was really well represented in the Year 5 and Year 6 competitions.  Here they are with their certificates.  Well done Layton, Muhammad, Ana-Beatriz, Mia, Natalia and Olivia.  Unfortunately, Olivia missed being in this photo as she had a dance examination to attend.

The Walking Octopus 

In the Northern Australia Rock Pools, there lives a rather unique and intelligent octopus. The species' scientific name is an Abdopus Aculeatus. 

Appearance 

Although this octopus seems very different it looks rather normal. It is a browny reddish colour with 8 long tentacles lined with hundreds of suckers. Its skin is bumpy in the water but when out of the water it appears shiny and smooth. 

Actions 

In order for the octopus to get out of the water, it must use its suckers to grip onto the rocks. Then it has to pull itself up onto the land. Once on the land, it slithers around and slides downhills. It also has to push itself to go back into the water. 

Conclusion 

Although this is an amazing marine animal they are rather rare and you can only find them in Northern

Australia.

St Johns - Emergency Responder Workshop

After morning tea we went to the Hamilton East School hall. We learnt about CPR and how to help people. My favourite part was the burns because the nurse told us that if you get burnt you need to put the burn in cold water. I learnt how to save people's lives. I practised bandaging my partner. It was a lot of fun.
